Biography

Cor Jaring (1936-2013) was an Amsterdammer in heart and soul who started photographing professionally in the fifties. He was of humble origin and initially worked as a dock worker. In between work, he began photographing the fringe he lived in: his friends and fellow boat workers, bar patrons, and iron workers. He captured everything with his 'kiekassie', as he called his camera. Cor was one of them and only later established his name as a photographer.
Cor Jaring acquired international fame especially in the 1960s. The summer of love 1967, the Provo movement, the white bicycle plan and his portrait of John Lennon and Yoko Ono during their Bed-In-for-Peace promotion in the Amsterdam Hilton hotel.
Cor Jaring ensured that Amsterdam was put on the international map.
However, these photos do not show all of the exciting body of work Jaring left behind.
Joseph & James (ART District's little brother) is proud that Cor's relatives have chosen the gallery.
The exhibition consists of unique and famous photos developed by Cor herself from the private property of the family and carefully selected by Curator Mare Bohlander, owner of ART District / Joseph & James. Some famous photos are also made available by the Amsterdam City Archives, to which Cor Jaring donated his negatives.
